The 3D printing is in all hype! Stock market went crazy over 3D Printing stocks, Obama mentioned 3D Printing in his State of Union, and Chinese government now has central government initiative on 3D Printing. Chris Anderson wrote a good book Makers: The New Industrial Revolution
taking about how Makers and 3D Printing are going to change the world.
With all the hype, we have to ask: “Where is the sex appeal of 3D Printing?” What does 3D printing advance the sex? In the past 50 years, all technology adoptions were driven by SEX: VCR, Internet and others. Without the sex appeal, technologies can’t be successful. We are two hackers over at XinCheJian the first hackerspace in China who are also into glamour photo shooting. We are living in the 3D Printing hype. While 3D printing is still relative new to the world, we at the hackerspace has been playing with them for years.
We came up with the idea of selling 3D printed jewelries of her body parts while we were shooting with our good model friend Yiyi. Yiyi is a famous photo model in China and have worked with photographers all over China. She also has a healthy obsession with her beautiful backside as seen in her portfolio and runs her QQ fan group “Black and White Ass Photo.”
Being true to our hacker nature, we got started right away. First, we had her in the space doing 3D scanning with Kinect. Yes, we are hackers and we work with what we have! Then we make the prototype jewleries out of the paper clips and common jewleries items we found on the street corner shops. Then we got start shooting with just a background papers and a few small flash. Yup, we are also Strobist. It’s an very interesting experience doing this one. We went from “high tech” 3D scanning and printing to making jewelry at a small old Shanghai apartment making jewelries by hand. Awesome mix of the old and the new ways of making stuff.
Ok, enough talk. Let’s see the prototype! And in the world promising unlimited digital replication, we decided to do a limited release of the necklace. We will only make 100 of this necklaces. Each necklace will cost USD$99 and comes with a personal card signed and lipstamp personally by Yiyi.
